Polish Society for Biomaterials (PSB): Polish Leader in Biomaterials Innovation

Recently, we discussed the Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials, which promotes the development of biomaterials research and
applications in Scandinavian, Nordic, and Baltic countries. Continuing our exploration of biomaterials institutions, we will now focus on Central Europe to present the Polish Society for Biomaterials (PSB). With its rich scientific tradition and rapidly growing research, Poland is becoming a key player in biomaterials. Let’s learn about the history and achievements of PSB, which has been bringing together scientists, doctors, and entrepreneurs to promote innovation and research in biomaterials.

The Polish Society for Biomaterials was founded in 1996, and since 2004, it has been affiliated with the European Society for Biomaterials. The society currently has 273 ordinary members from all over Poland, most of whom are academics from both the technical and medical sciences, as well as graduate and PhD students from various fields, such as material engineering and medicine.

The PSB aims to support and promote interdisciplinary research on biomaterials and their application in medicine. The organization achieves its goals through conferences, seminars, workshops, and publishing activities, collaborating with scientific and industrial institutions both in Poland and abroad.

The PSB publishes the journal “Engineering of Biomaterials“, which has been released quarterly since 1997. Initially, it published articles in two languages, but since 2007, it has been published only in English. The journal presents peer-reviewed papers on biomaterial and biomedical engineering, covering the design of biocompatible materials, implants, drug carriers, medical devices, and research on biomaterial production technologies and their interactions with the biological environment. “Engineering of Biomaterials” is peer-reviewed, indexed in several databases, including Directory of Open Access Journals, and is free of charge for both authors and readers (no APC).

The society regularly organizes scientific conferences, such as “Biomaterials in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine“, which attract scientists and doctors worldwide. This year, the 33rd annual conference of the Polish Society for Biomaterials will be held 10-13 October in Rytro. These conferences are excellent opportunities to exchange knowledge and establish collaborations between different scientific communities.

One of the most important events in the PSB’s history was the organization of the 27th European Conference on Biomaterials in 2015 in Krakow, which gathered nearly 1000 participants worldwide and was a huge success.

The PSB actively participates in international initiatives and collaborates with many organizations worldwide. In 2018, the PSB co-organized the 4th International Conference on Biomedical Polymer & Polymeric Biomaterials (ISBPPB 2018), attracting 250 participants from 36 countries. This conference confirmed the PSB’s importance in the global biomaterials community. PSB actively participates in international initiatives and collaborates with many organizations worldwide.

It is also worth noting that the worldwide significance of the Polish Society for Biomaterials is recognized through its President, Prof. Elzbieta Pamula, who serves as the Secretary of the Steering Committee of The International College of Fellows of Biomaterials Science and Engineering and as the Education Officer in the Council of the European Society for Biomaterials.
